What is Warez?

by admin on February 19, 2012

Warez are defined as any software or copyrighted works that are widely distributed without royalties and fees. The distribution of such works and applications are considered a violation of the copyright law. The unauthorized release of such softwares are normally distributed by organized groups and is very different from file sharing that is a common practice of sharing applications between larger group of people that have a similar interest.

The term is actually a shortened form of computer software and is now considered a modern internet or computer lingo. Although it was meant to be pronounced as wares (the last four letters in the term ‘software’), it is most commonly mispronounced as ‘warez’ (similar to the English pronunciation of Juarez).

More About Warez

Warez are widely and commonly distributed outside a collection of warez groups and can be downloaded through torrents. For some software that require serial numbers to make the program work, people who download warez rely on ‘crackers’ or ‘key-makers’ who crack the codes in a licensed product and distribute such numbers in order for a warez to work.

Some leading vendors have created copy-protection schemes to thwart the efforts of crackers in releasing pirated copies of the software on the day it was scheduled to be released in the market. Since large software companies are often the target of piracy, some of these companies hire people to create and release fake torrents that look real. Upon downloading such torrents, the IP address of the user who’s attempting to download the application is sent to these companies without the user’s knowledge. Upon receiving the IP address of the user, the company will then contact the user’s ISP and further legal actions can be taken against the user. Though warez are tempting because they are free, one must also be aware that they are illegal and is punishable by law.
